The post 6 ways to seize opportunity appeared first on Bizlife Smarts.
]]>There are many ways to seize opportunity, but let’s focus on 6 that are above board; no shortcuts, and underhanded tricks here! Some will say that the first 3 of these are outside of one’s control. But is that really the case?! In order to seize opportunity, we mostly need things to first align in our favour, and then we take control to make it happen.

The word ‘chance’ has several synonyms, some more common than others. It can closely defined as ‘the possibility of something happening’. Or it can be stretched to mean, ‘a break, an opening, things coming your way’ …or in other words…an opportunity. You know, some may ask, why does it seem that one person succeeds, where others are struggling? For one to be in a position to have good fortune, chance has to come their way. Let’s go on a bit, because the next concept is closely related. The following is important, because chance can also go the wrong way. You know, as in, ‘He allowed them the chance to take advantage of him’.

So, serendipity is simply when chance works out in a positive way. We all know how chance can present itself as a huge opportunity squandered! You know the striker, with a goalmouth wide open before him, and he shoots it wide left. Or the NBA player with an open slam dunk, only to ricochet it off the backboard, all the way to the opposite side of the court. When chance presents itself, serendipity is what makes the chips fall the right way. Don’t let anybody kid you, every person successful in seizing opportunity, has had serendipity on their side.

The debate over what drives us, fate versus free will; though having a clear dividing line, is inconclusive. Not all of us believe in fate. But when I look around at many of the most fortuitous events and people in the world, I truly believe that some things were simply meant to be. The other day, I heard a highly successful person say that, a common trait amongst the most successful people on earth, is that they knew early on, exactly who they are, and what they were put on this earth to do. https://bodheeprep.com/destiny-not-hard-work-determines-success
But then at some point, free will comes into play. Your fate may be written in the sand, but at some point you are faced with choices that can absolutely change the trajectory of your life. In seizing opportunity, is where fate and free will come together. Hand in hand they help you make the right decision. If Dana White hadn’t dropped out of college he wouldn’t have founded the UFC, at a time when such a sport wasn’t even on the radar. However, without the many key choices he made, he would never have turned it into the juggernaught that it is. Would we have ever tasted the ‘Finger Lickin’ Good’ KFC if Colonel Harland Sanders hadn’t been a brawler and insubordinate; serially losing jobs, having his first restaurant burn down, then inventing his secret recipe at the age of 50, and developing his nationwide franchise at the age of 65? https://community.macmillanlearning.com/t5/talk-psych-blog/chance-encounters-and-the-story-of-life/ba-p/6923. Fate is what presents the opportunity; free will is the choice we make to seize opportunity.

And that is a great segue to doggedness. Doggedness is tenacity and perseverance; and basically just pure grit. When fate places opportunity in front of you, what you do with it is what makes all the difference. Remember when we told you to be at the table, and not on the menu?! https://bizlifesmarts.com/at%20the%20table%20for%20opportunity Well, now we are explaining it further. I hate to say it, but there are those who sit back, and go into cruise control, when opportunity lands on their lap. Just getting there is the victory for them. That is not enough. What you do when you get into the arena of opportunity, is to grab it by the neck. Think of the G.O.A.T.s in many sports. For various reasons, opportunity was elusive at first. But when it came about, their tenacity is what made them great. https://bizlifesmarts.com/mindset%20to%20win. You must keep pushing until you get over the final finish line. In the words of the late, great Jim Valvano, National Championship winning coach of North Carolina State University; ‘Don’t give up…don’t ever give up!’

Talent, though it helps, doesn’t guarantee you anything in life. Let me give you three lists.
List 1. Freddy Adu, Ted Kaczynski, Vincent Van Gogh, Bobby McFerrin, Macaulay Culkin.
List 2: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Sylvester Stallone, Sir Richard Branson, Kris Carr, Simon Cowell.
List 3: Albert Einstein, Steven Spielberg, J.K. Rowling, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Disney, Colonel Harlan Sanders.
Please…take some time to try and decipher the lists, before you read on.
List 1 were hugely talented, but failed to achieve their potential, while alive. The second list really didn’t have much talent to speak of, but have achieved immensely. The stars, and the other 5 points, simply aligned for them to succeed. And the final list are those who fit the theme of this piece, in seizing opportunity. Things didn’t start out well for them, as they pursued their dreams, with the obvious talent that they knew they possessed. But once opportunity presented itself, their talent shone through.

Sticking to the plan, is what brings together the previous 5 elements of seizing opportunity. Have you ever watched a predator in the hunt, on a wildlife show? They are faced with so many distrations, ranging from unwanted intrusions, to passing by potential prey, that may seem to be an easier catch. But the successful hunters are the ones that stick to their target.
We are continually distracted and diverted by the non-essential, over-promises, and false opportunities. In sticking to the plan, we prevent these distractions from diverting us from our course. The discipline of pursuing and lining up chance, serendipity, destiny, doggedness, and our talent; and not veering off course, nor being discouraged, it what will enable us to seize opportunity, when it comes.

]]>The post Run silent … run deep! appeared first on Bizlife Smarts.
]]>What does the expression ‘run silent, run deep’ really mean? Discretion? Stealth? Foresight? Silent power? Let’s get to the bottom of it, and hopefully we can understand how it relates to business strategy.
The instances of raw power that you have ever encountered in your life, probably didn’t need to loudly broadcast their power to you: the stern father entering the home; Mike Tyson before a fight; the late Queen Elizabeth entering a ballroom. Now, we can’t all be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, or the sovereign of an empire, but we can learn to tap into the power of silence.

The saying originates from how a submarine should run when in attack mode. Now, don’t confuse this with the term, ‘silent, but deadly’, which more often refers to a lethal emission of gas. Neither should you misinterpret it for the description of the personality type, which is basically an introvert. Let me get technical for a moment. Whilst the latter expression is said as a continuous sentence, the title of this piece is said with a pause between the top and the tail of the phrase; ‘run silent (pause) run deep’.

Have you ever noticed that the loudest person in the room is rarely the person you’d most admire or respect? The same is true for self-promoters, chest-thumpers, braggarts, bullies and all manner of people who tend to loudly project their perceived sense of self, or power.
You have to ask, ‘what is the value in having to proclaim yourself, your strengths or your virtues?’. Shouldn’t those great attributes, if they exist, be self evident, and need no proclamation…or accolades be given to you by other parties? So, it goes to the heart of the question, of the purpose that is served by such thunder and fury. I think we all know the answer. As the saying goes, ‘Confidence is silent, insecurities are loud’.

What is it about silence that gives us such power? Meditation and mindfulness practice have it that, this is the route to getting in touch with your higher spirituality.
Mindfulness is usually defined as awareness of one’s internal states and surroundings, by maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, in manner that not only cares for ourselves, but cares for those around us. It can help us to avoid destructive habits and responses, through this awareness of how our thoughts and emotions, affect our environment and those around us. When you run silent, you are better able to be in touch with this practice of mindfulness.
Outside influences are what often jar us, and set us off course. Athletes often talk about their greatest performances coming when they are in “the zone”. This is a place where outside influences, noise and distraction, have no ability to set them off their path and their goals.
Running silent helps you to channel your energy to the places where it is needed most, and not expend useless energy.

This debate on whether Michael Jordan or Lebron James is the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.) has been raging for quite some time. You can see the objective accolades awarded to them by the National Basketball Association in the image above. It is without doubt, that Lebron would need another hall of fame career (akin to Kevin Durant’s outstanding career) in his remaining years, to even approach Michael Jordan’s achievements. But then, it is instructive to also look at their mindsets and respective characters. Let’s see if you can differentiate which words come out of the mouths of each of them.
‘I am the King!’ ‘I am the chosen one!’
‘A greater player than me will come down the line, and surpass my achievements.’ ‘I didn’t win without my teammate (sic), and that’s why I consider him the best teammate of all time’.
The former is from the one of the two of them, who chooses to broadcast himself, loudly and boastfully. The latter is the one who runs silent… runs deep, and is the G.O.A.T. in every imaginable way. https://bizlifesmarts.com/completely_present_mj23
This is the essence of personal power. Just as Michael Jordan exhibits it, we see it in others. Be they supreme athletes, or great listeners, or genius thinkers, or those who lead by example and not by just words. They are all inspirational leaders, who leave us in awe of their greatness, once we delve beneath the surface.
It is about personal power. Running silent places you in control of your own environment. And not only does it do that, but it gives you the power to do great things.
Ergo, the connection to sharks. Experts consider sharks to be one of the most evolved species, having been around for about 400 million years. You can say that they’ve learned the tricks of the trade. How to not just survive, but thrive. That saying, ‘run silent…run deep’, originated in the context of submarine stealth attacks. I am one who believes that the invention of submarines was inspired by sharks.
By us using this analogy of a 400 million year knowledge journey, we can learn a thing or two. Use silence to your advantage, to master yourself…and your environment.

]]>Actuation happens when opportunity and insight go hand in hand. 2022 is an election year in Kenya. However, our landscape is full of slogans and seemingly wise aphorisms, that are simply empty rhetoric.
We have drawn the political battle lines in Kenya, where the central theme appears to be that one must choose the correct alliance in order to be at the table. One of the oft-repeated sayings is that, ‘if you’re not at the table, then you’re on the menu’. However, I don’t subscribe to this. It’s simply not enough to be at the table. You may still go hungry if there’s nothing on the menu for you. The reason I bring this up is competing interests. There are so many, that to try to serve them all will dilute them all. As we go through our 2022 political journey, it will be a useful roadmap of how to, and how not to make strategic choices.
But, although Kenyan politics will be a good barometer for strategic choices, this piece is not really about politics.

It’s not just about having a seat at the table. It’s about what you do when you get there. Are you there to look at the fancy menu options, or to feed your needs? Please don’t misconstrue this. This is not promoting greed or corruption. It’s about realising opportunity. Once you get to the table, it’s not about the menu, it’s about the meal. Let’s put it in a frame we’ve all been through. How many times have you found yourself suddenly thrust into a situation, then lost for words? How many times have you slapped yourself after the fact, for not having made a a different move when confronted or presented with an opportunity? You made it to the table, were presented with the menu, but missed out on the meal.

So…when you earn your seat at the table, will you be awestruck by the menu, or make the most of the meal? If you are familiar with the theme of the movie the Matrix; the blue pill maintains you in the ignorance of the status quo, while the red pill opens up your horizons.
You won’t make much of it, by being simply content to get to the table, and awestruck by the menu presented to you. You’ll deliver few opportunities for your interests, and will not be able to transform it into a meal to satisfy your needs and goals. Unfortunately, too many of us are in blue pill, menu mode. We don’t prepare ourselves to sit at the table. We don’t hone our insights, and prepare ourselves for what we’ll do once we get to the table. The table-setters, can tell from a mile away that you are unprepared for that stage. You won’t be invited back the next time, and YOU WILL then be on the menu.

The red pill is analagous to seeing a whole new dimension, that wakes you up to a transformative reality. You don’t arrive at this transformative reality by accident; it is by conscious choice, but also with preparation. When you get to the table with the ‘red pill’ mindset, you will actualise your goals and ambitions. So, what does having this mindset entail when you get to the table? https://www.qcc.cuny.edu/socialsciences/ppecorino/intro_text/chapter%201%20introduction/blue-pill-orred-pill.htm
After all, a meal is about sharing and building community, not just about eating.

]]>The post Golf and personal growth – Oil & Water appeared first on Bizlife Smarts.
]]>Personal growth is a dynamic, gradual, step-by-step process, focused on a long-term destination. Golf, on the other hand, all too often focuses on fixing what is visibly and immediately in front of you: keep your eye on the ball, extend your swing smoothly, aim for the pin, hit the sweet spot of the club. A bad shot, high scoring hole, or poor scorecard can set you back psychologically and emotionally. With personal growth, setbacks will abound and tough betterment techniques are par for the course (pardon the pun).
Now, why would I use golf as the antithesis of personal growth? Well, maybe it’s middle age, and the company I keep. A series of golf stories, that focus on character and personal attributes, have recently been catching my attention. From Tiger’s car accident, to Rory McIlroy’s broken game, to Bryson DeChambeau sacrificing longevity for a short term meteoric rise, to Dustin Johnson’s (DJ) mental strength.
Ultimately, mindfulness is a big part of personal growth, whilst golf is much more about tunnel vision. Many stories in this area are pretty straightforward, but the story of DJ’s mental fortitude is particularly more illustrative of my point https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2021/03/30/2020-masters-dustin-johnson-major-champion-mental-game-island/. So, the point that it drives home is that, success in golf is about focusing on the moment and shutting out everything else. Indeed this relates to the environment around you, the past and the future.

So, what are some of the platitudes we hear surrounding golf?
The realities of golf are actually not really these, but are more focused on:
Once again, these are not the types of things you focus on when trying to better yourself as a human being. It’s sad to say, but they are the things you display for the approval of others. The latter are the reality, whilst the former are the excuses made to justify a pastime when the individual makes it quite selfish in spending time with the game.

Watching many club golfers, you’ll understand why this dichotomy exists. In essence, they are practicing to look better and not to actually get better. Unfortunately, golf has many myths and misconceptions in this regard, and most people fall prey to them. As mentioned, these mostly revolve around mechanics and appearance, rather than what the platitudes would have us believe. The first thing you see club golfers do, is head to the practice range. Now, I don’t know about you, but at my home club, the pitching green and putting green are usually deserted. All the players, decked out in their fancy duds, are packed at the driving range. As this article attests, they are working on their golf swing, and not on their golf game. https://www.golfpsych.com/playing-golf-or-golf-swing/

Now, let’s get to the crux of the matter at hand. https://forge.medium.com/a-mental-trick-to-make-any-task-less-intimidating-71ab2b25d663. We all strive to be that best version of ourselves. We all know in our heart of hearts, what that best self looks like. But the challenge is becoming it, and maintaining it. In fact, we all the time see ourselves determined to be better and do better, but then some trigger simply derails us. With wisdom, and maturation, we learn that it’s a constant, daily journey of work. Rarely, if ever, does one just say, ‘I want to be better’, and they become a better person. Some outside influence, support and guidance is almost always required.
For some, it’s mentorship and life-coaching (although I find the first to be invaluable, I find latter to be hogwash). For others, it’s simply improving the company we keep. These can be informal, through family, work or community mentors and role models, or they can be through formal personal growth techniques. My favourite is mindfulness practice, through meditation. It is however one of the most challenging things to perfect, and requires not only mastering the art, but also continual practice.

Let’s look at the dichotomy between golf and personal growth, and try and mix that oil and water.
So…how often do golfers play for themselves and not for others?! I’ve often heard that you don’t play golf against other players; you don’t play golf against the course; you play it against yourself! And that would be the beauty of golf, if weren’t for the flaw of human nature.
And that is why golf and personal growth are oil and water together. Personal growth is about being the you that you want to and can be. Golf has unfortunately been bastardized to become the player that others see you to be. As long as golfers chase this mirage, they will keep chasing the folly of other people’s judgement.

What we need here is an emulsifier. Some of my favourite foods are oil and water mixes: mayonnaise, ice-cream, béarnaise sauce and sausages are some of these. Emulsifiers coat and break down oils and water into a tasty, truly enjoyable mix.
There’s a reason why that beautiful, idyllic water is a magnet for the ball, for even the best players in the world. It humbles you, to bring you back to your true self. Do you see a ball, a club, a caddie, a swing, a putt or a 350 yard drive in the image above? That’s because, almost all golfers fail to get the best out of the game. The purpose of the game is right there in that image. Ask yourself why golf courses are some of the most exquisite, scenic places in the world.
Here are my 5 keys on how golf can become a pastime for personal growth.
If you leave this place with less peace and clarity than you arrived with, then you are doing everything wrong. Personal growth will be a challenge for you.
The point is that we should not mistake the tools given to us, to make us grow and succeed, as the focus for where we want to get to – don’t let the tools become the destination. Focusing on the tools and not the destination, is like the old adage of “not seeing the forest, for the trees”.
Whether a recreational golfer, or a professional, it’s really not that serious. Most cultures have a ball and stick game, that is metronomically enthralling and used to unwind. Golf is just another one of those. Their origins, and in their purest form, help us take our minds off the pressures that weigh on us, to a place without a care. So, let’s stop putting pressure on ourselves by obsessing over the tools, the swing and the scores.
Let’s turn the challenges of golf, not into destroyers of the soul, but into occasions for personal growth. Enjoying the game for what it was meant to be is what will get us there.

]]>The post I can’t wait for 2020 to end! appeared first on Bizlife Smarts.
]]>2020! Towards the end of the year, I kept hearing people say, ‘I can’t wait for 2020 to end’. Now, that’s an altogether reasonable response to any unpleasant experience. However, it happened so often that I began to wonder, ‘What are these folks all expecting to happen at midnight on December 31st?’. ‘Is it going to be a reverse Cinderella moment?’. Okay…glass slippers now have your name on them; gilded horse-drawn carriage is a Maybach and that prince/ princess really is that person you’ve been crushing on forever. Sigh!
Look, I’m not trying to be insensitive here. I get it. Human nature is, when in a tough situation to look for hope wherever we can find it. I got irritated with that oft repeated, ‘I can’t wait for 2020 to end’ because I found it to be forced escapism. At the height of the early fear around the pandemic, I read somewhere that those who plan well ahead for life during and after the pandemic, will come out of it the best. This piece further reinforces that and goes into more detail on the drivers behind that. https://www.news24.com/w24/SelfCare/Wellness/Mind/its-time-to-create-a-bounce-back-plan-and-overcome-challenges-beyond-covid-19-heres-how-20200518.
Point no. 2 in that article makes my point (pardon that repetition). ‘Accept that things will not get back to the way they were’! The magic wand of normalcy was not waved, and the magic bell of regularity did not toll at 00:01 on 1st January 2021. The COVID induced challenges of 2020 did not suddenly go away. No Christian Louboutin shoes; no Maybach; and definitely no prince charming or the woman of your dreams, sweeping you off your feet. The COVID-19 pandemic is going to be with us for a while, and a new year will not magically soften it’s impact.

The turn of the year was a time to rest, recharge and re-energise. Yes, many had been pummelled in 2020, and like a boxer who has absorbed body blows, we needed to take the time between rounds to come back stronger in 2021.
2021 is with us and little has changed from the end of 2020. Don’t dwell on that fact. Plan, plan, plan; and now is the time! Be pragmatic more than hopeful. I give you these 3 pieces of uncommon sense.

I would not advise you to try and fight fire with fire, after the year 2020 that many went through. You cannot burn hotter or brighter. Don’t tell yourself that by simply doing things better or working harder, things will change. If we learn nothing else from the COVID pandemic, it is not to confront it head on like the other challenges we’ve encountered, but to counter it with alternative actions, that dissipate or minimise, not cancel, its effects.
Hope is sold to us throughout our lives, and we are told that it is the way to succeed and thrive. But not in the COVID-era. We can hope we don’t get the disease; hope the healthcare system doesn’t become overstretched; hope that a successful vaccine reaches us. But the only thing that gives us the best chance to survive COVID is managing our environment through action. Wash your hands regularly with soap. Always wear a mask when outside your home. Keep your physical and social distance (they are two different things by the way). In your professional life, don’t simply hope that things work out or that a deal comes through. Deal with the elements of greatest certainty around you.
Most sensible people I know have always planned around the important things in their lives. However, how often do we pay attention to the realistic detail, rather than what we believe to be the facts. In the past, we’ve listened to the so-called experts, taken the stock market advice from your colleagues, and bet on that horse that your uncle told you was a sure thing. In this COVID-era, we must plan meticulously, based on the knowledge of first hand facts that we have immediately before us. If you don’t know it
, then don’t plan for it to happen. Insurmountable odds require extraordinary planning, and then following that plan to a T.
The Agile Alliance is an organisation that is considered best-in-class in dealing with succeeding in uncertain and turbulent environments. Even they got caught out by COVID in 2020, and are now bullseye focused on delivering their 2021 main event through meticulous planning. https://www.agilealliance.org/agile2021-responding-to-change-over-following-a-plan/
Another example I’m going to give may come across as a contradiction, because it was one of the greatest feats of human endurance. Eliud Kipchoge ran a marathon in under 2 hours, a little over a year ago – which was thought to be impossible. He and others had attempted it before, and failed. Do you know what brought the final breakthrough? Meticulous, realistic planning for every single element; from training, to diet, to pace, to wind speed, to humidity, to elevation, to the composition of and pit-stop exchanges of the human pacesetters shield. And you know what – Eliud participated first hand in every aspect of that planning. https://bizlifesmarts.com/1:59:40-possible
This planning may affect the scale of our plans, but at least you won’t get any nasty surprises and it will raise your level of certainty of outcomes. And you may just be surprised at the level of success you achieve, even on that different, smaller scale. Which leads me to the third and final point.
We have all been raised and acculturated to live for the future. However, COVID necessitates that we live for today, and the future will somehow fall in place. Maintain all the resources you can muster that are real and can sustain day by day for the foreseeable future. Don’t depend on the uncertain deal that may come in, the dividends you hope the market may yield, or acquiring the things you’ve always wished for; and don’t blindly depend on others delivering results for you. Focus on the things that will:
